Ephesians 2:1-10
What does it mean to be truly dead before God, and what does it take to be made alive again?
Ephesians chapter 2 lays out one of the most sobering and yet breathtaking truths in all of Scripture: that apart from Christ, we were not simply struggling or wounded, we were dead in our trespasses and sins. Dead people cannot reach for a life jacket. Dead people cannot choose their way out. And yet, in the middle of that hopelessness, God acted. Not because we were worthy, not because we had earned anything, but because of His great love and mercy.
The passage walks us through the stunning contrast between what we were and what we have been made, from children of wrath living according to the ways of this world, to people raised up and seated with Christ in the heavenly places. The central insight here is that grace is not a reward, it is a gift. And the moment we truly grasp that we could never have saved ourselves, that our very nature was bent away from God, the more overwhelming and personal that gift becomes. This is not a message about behavior modification. It is a message about a nature that has been transformed from the inside out by the power of the living God.

We were all born spiritually dead in sin, with a nature entirely contrary to God, and incapable of reaching Him on our own.

We are God's masterpiece, saved not by works but for works that He has already prepared for us to walk in.
